Garden Planning

Example 1

Let’s say you live in an apartment and only have a sunny window to work with…no problem! Grab yourself some pots, or a garden box, buy some seeds or starter plants, place them on your windowsill, fill with dirt, water and BOOM! You’re growing!! Some great choices for someone who is new to gardening would be something easy like culinary, or medicinal herbs (ex. Basil, Oregano, Chives, Thyme, Rosemary, Dill, or Mint). You can even grow things like lettuce, spinach, radishes, beets, kale and even cherry tomatoes (if it’s a sunny enough window).

A way to expand your window space even more is to make a small investment (we’re talking under $30), in hanging glass shelving. These are multi-tiered shelving options that can quadruple the amount of things you can grow on one little sunny window!

Another great, highly nutritious option is to grow microgreens. These not only grow super well indoors, but they can be grown on a rack, or a shelf with just a little grow light. And the bonus here is that they are ready for harvest in as little as 7-10 days, and are highly nutritious. Easy peasy!

Example 3

Now let’s say you have a house with some property (could be 1/4acre or more). To the naked eye it may look like a small piece of land with not enough room for any real growing potential. Well, that could not be farther from the truth. This is when we roll up the old sleeves and get to work with a creative design that will allow you enough food to feed a family of four!

This space allows for multiple fruit trees, a variety of berry bushes, strawberries, potatoes, herbs and lots and lots of vegetables. Oh, and please let’s not forget those beautiful, and highly important, native pollinator plants. Those are the guys who lovingly lure our beautiful bug friends, and keep them pollinating all your edible goodies, to ensure a bountiful harvest. Between raised beds with trellises, planter boxes, garden beds and multiple pots strewn about, filled with more plants…(and not to mention when you start companion planting, which is a process that helps you, thoughtfully and deliberately, over plant your garden beds and boxes). With all of this, you can not only enjoy a daily (seasonal) harvest, but, this will also allow you to start preserving some of your crops, which will allow you to lengthen the time that you can enjoy the fruits of your labor.

AND…. Here’s where you can add in Chickens. (Of course always check with your towns regulations, before starting your flock)
