Food…beyond the garden

LET’S TALK CHICKENS!

With today’s uncertainty, food prices soaring, while the quality of food plummets, and the intermittent scarcity of certain staple food items, (psst…eggs), it may be time to start providing yourself a bit more food security, beyond the garden.

I’m talking about Chickens! But, chickens are hard to take care of…chickens are loud…chickens are expensive… We’re going to squash all of those common misconceptions right now.

1) Chickens are hard to take care of:

2) Chickens are loud:

3) Chickens are expensive:

Now, while I will admit the start up cost for chickens can be a little costly (coop and run, waterer and feeder, bedding and of course buying the baby chicks), they don’t have to be. There are definitely ways to minimize even those costs. You can find cheap (or even free) used coops on places like FB Marketplace or Craigslist, or again, if you’re feeling ambitious, you can build your own, or you can even be super creative and take an old piece of furniture like a cabinet, or dresser/wardrobe and convert it into a small coop. Honestly chickens aren’t picky. They just want a place that’s safe from predators, warm and draft free.

But, honestly once you’re up and running, the cost is very low, and you will have years and years of fresh and super nutritious eggs (and meat, if you choose that option as well). Chickens definitely add that next level of food security, for years to come, and they are just so much fun. And…this is everything we could help you with all of this, and more…
